My "Underwater" series is an ongoing body of work and is a reflection of growing up and living along the South Australian coastline for the majority of my life. I start by creating what I call an "interesting background" - applying swirls of texture onto the canvas with a home made texture paste, then applying blocks of colour in acrylics with a palette knife over which I then paint a thin veneer of whitewash. I then create depth in the water by scrubbing in oils over the top. Once this is dry, I then intuitively create the scene over the top, with very free and loose brush work, and generally with bold and bright colours. Life is only added at the end, once the piece dictates to me what that life needs to be.
